If you've searched for a Scandinavian recliner, you've landed on the same two names everyone does: Stressless and Fjords. Both come from Sykkylven, a small town on the west coast of Norway. Both are built by hand, sold through authorized dealers, and expected to last 20 years or more. Both are on the floor at Bova's showroom on Alpha Road in Dallas, side by side, which is the only honest way to compare them.
What they have in common
Each brand builds a recliner around a cold-cured foam seat over a steel frame, with a glide mechanism that follows your body as you lean back instead of asking you to pull a lever. Both offer three chair sizes (small, medium, large) so the seat depth and headrest height match your build, both come in leather grades from entry to full-aniline, and both make matching ottomans, sofas and office chairs. If you've sat in one, you already understand the other.
Where Stressless is different
Stressless (made by Ekornes) has the larger lineup and the most name recognition. The Mayfair, Sunrise, Consul, Reno, Admiral and Wing are the classic "signature" shapes; the Sam, Max, Mike and Adam are the newer, more upright modern designs. Stressless offers three base styles: the Classic wood base, the Signature base with a built-in rocking motion, and the Cross base. The Power versions motorize the leg rest and back independently. Stressless also has the widest leather range, with Batick, Paloma, Cori and Noblesse grades, and dozens of colors in stock at the factory.
Choose Stressless if you want the most options, the Signature base rocking feel, or you're matching an existing Stressless sofa or office chair.
Where Fjords is different
Fjords (made by Hjellegjerde) sells a tighter range at a slightly lower price for a comparable chair. The Jewel, Muldal, Bergen, Alfa and Admiral are the core recliners, and Fjords' Relax collection includes a large selection of motorized recliners and lift chairs (Milan, Memphis, Austin) that Stressless doesn't offer in the same way. Fjords chairs tend to feel a little firmer and more supportive out of the box; Stressless tends to feel softer and more enveloping. Fjords also uses a Swing base option and its own AL leather grades.
Choose Fjords if you want a firmer seat, a lift chair, or the best value in a Norwegian recliner.
How to choose in the showroom
Sit in a Stressless Mayfair and a Fjords Jewel in the same size, one after the other, for at least five minutes each. Lean all the way back, then sit up and read. Notice which headrest supports your neck without pushing your head forward. Then decide on power vs. manual (power is worth it if you'll change positions often), the base style, and the leather.
